Our full guide to Botox® – Mirabel Clinic – Swindon

This is a clinical safety and information blog for the treatment Botulinum Toxin Type A, which is commonly referred to as Botox®. It is for educational purposes only.

Botox® or Botulinum Toxin is a substance which has been used for many years to temporarily smooth expression lines and dynamic wrinkles and when administered by a fully-qualified medical professional, can offer superb results for months at a time.

At Mirabel Clinic in Swindon, we offer Botox®, wrinkle-smoothing injections in a clinical environment, performed by our medically-qualified team of specialist practitioners. We often get asked a variety of questions about this treatment, prior to a patient booking a consultation, so we have gathered a list of most commonly asked FAQs, so you can be well informed to make an educated decision on whether Botox® would be right for you and how to choose a safe Botox® treatment in Swindon.

What is Botox®?

Botox® is actually a brand name belonging to Allergan for the substance Botulinum Toxin Type A, a neurotoxin which has been found to be very useful in medicine for various conditions.

When used for anti-ageing purposes, Botox® blocks the nerve signals which cause the facial muscles to contract and create those dynamic wrinkles which can be a nuisance.

Lines such as crow’s feet, forehead lines, those annoying lines between the eyebrows (Glabellar lines) and even the wrinkles at the sides of the nose can be temporarily smoothed with a series of Botox® injections.

Who can administer Botox® safely?

Botox® is a prescribed drug, so it’s illegal for a non-medic to purchase, prescribe and administer this substance. However, this is happening more and more in the UK, so it’s vital that you ensure that anyone you enlist to conduct your Botox® treatment is a qualified medical professional such as a doctor, dentist, nurse prescriber or surgeon.

They also need to have been specifically trained in Botox® treatments, so make sure they display their qualifications and certifications at their clinic. If not, ask to see them.

Do Botox® injections hurt?

Just with any treatment involving the use of a needle, there can be some discomfort with Botox® injections. However, as the needles used are extremely fine and the injections small, you should not need any pain relief. You might experience the odd ‘slight’ bruise, which is rare with Botox® but normal. You can use ice or Arnica to reduce any small bruises which might occur.

How long do results last from Botox®?

Every patient is unique in how they respond to Botox® and the longevity of their results is too. In general we tend to advise patients to return every 3 to 6 months for a Botox® treatment, however, some of our patients report results lasting beyond this time.

We would not retreat a patient in under 3 months.

Am I too young to have Botox®?

In general, a patient might start to think about having Botox® injections from their thirties onwards.

However, some younger patients who are experiencing the early signs of ageing can opt for something called ‘Baby Botox®’. This treatment is superb for patients who have never had wrinkle-smoothing injections and want to ease into the experience, or for those with more minor or subtle expression lines, and who wish to start Botox® treatments to prevent lines and wrinkles from forming. The dosage of Botox® administered is reduced, and in some cases, the injections are more superficial.

We would not advise anyone under the age of 18 to have Botox® injections, unless for a specific medical treatment.

Am I too old to have Botox®?

In order to answer this question, we would need to examine your facial anatomy and assess your skin. In cases where there is significant skin ageing and the lines and wrinkles are deeper and static (meaning they appear when your face is not creating an expression), a treatment using dermal fillers might be more suitable and appropriate.

In many anti-ageing treatment cases, Botox® can be used in conjunction with dermal fillers, for a holistic approach to non-surgical injectable anti-ageing treatments and can be extremely effective for our more mature patients.

Are there any reasons why people can’t have Botox®?

As with most injectable treatments, there will be contraindications which may prevent or restrict a Botox® treatment from going ahead. These include pregnancy and breastfeeding, on-site infection, allergies to Botulinum Toxin, keloid scarring, neuromuscular disorders and body dysmorphia.

Therefore at Mirabel Clinic, we offer a no-obligation free of charge consultation, skin analysis and medical history check with one of our medical practitioners, so we can be sure that Botox® will be a safe and effective option for you.

Is there any aftercare?

As with all injectable procedures, there are some aftercare instructions that your practitioner will give you, following your Botox® procedure.
